If you make a contribution to one type of IRA but later decide that you would rather have the contribution go into a different type of IRA, you can recharacterize the deposit as long as you make the decision before the tax filing deadline. For example, if you made a Traditional IRA contribution in June 2019, you can recharacterize it to a Roth IRA contribution if done by the tax filing deadline of April 15, 2020.
